Autumn/Winter Eye Makeup

Beauty trends come and go as quickly as the ebbing tide. Here's our take on the latest beauty looks on the Autumn/Winter 2008 catwalks.

40s Glamour   40s Glamour

The polished, pin–up starlet look of Hollywood's Golden Age is all about sleek, polished curls, strong, ruby red lips and strong defined eyes. Think of 40s silver screen icon Veronica Lake, and you get the picture. Seen on the catwalks of Gucci, Roberto Cavalli and Valentino, the look – with beautifully groomed brows, flawless skin, dark lashes and a defined line of jet black liquid eyeliner just at the edge of the upper lid – is one of glamour and epitomizes the strong, sophisticated woman of that era.

Makeup tip: Because lips are the focus of this look, use a freshly sharpened lip liner to define the shape of your lips before filling in the colour with a lip brush.

Different faces of rock   Different faces of rock

A rock 'n' roll attitude isn't necessarily all about dark eyes and pale, pouty lips. Take Givenchy, for instance. Their models were sent down the runway in pale complexions, bleached eyebrows, mild red lips and sculpted cheeks. The rock element? Free-flowing rock chic locks, parted dead down the middle. But of course, the conventional rock chick look still makes its appearance this season, with the conventional charcoaled eyes, pale face and lips, topped with layered locks.

Makeup tip: Rock 'n' roll is all about having a devil–may–care attitude so don't fret too much about neatly drawn eyeliner lines or properly filled in lipstick. Apply your lipstick with your fingers, for the look of reckless abandonment.

Polished   Polished

Polished, flawless complexions, peachy cheeks and sculpted jaw lines – that was the look at shows like Alberta Ferretti, Bottega Veneta and Jil Sander. Foundation is kept to a minimal, with concealer being used wherever necessary. Eyelashes are carefully curled and lashings of mascara used, but only on the upper lashes. Bronzers are the perfect way to sculpt the face, and a soft heather grey can be used subtly on the eyelids.

Makeup tip: To take the polished look another step further, try 1 • DAY ACUVUE® DEFINE™ & 1 • DAY ACUVUE® MOIST®, which helps add definition to the eyes.

Purity   Purity

The latest incarnation of the au naturel look is one of purity. Think garden nymphs with their loose, flowing locks and fair, tender faces. The fresh–faced, just–rolled–out–of–bed look is achieved with clean, very minimalist makeup, flushed pink cheeks, glossy lids and lips – in essence, a look that's ultra clean, ultra pure. Hardly any eye makeup is used aside from a coat of mascara each on the upper and lower lashes.

Makeup tip: A healthy, clear complexion is imperative when trying to achieve this look, so drink lots of water and be religious with your beauty regime.

The Dark Side   The Dark Side

From Elvira to Joan of Arc, the look is bewitching, vampy, even a touch sinister. The Gothic/Medieval look is hot on the catwalks for Autumn/Winter 2007. Charcoal gray smudged eye shadow, soothy black eyeliner and a touch of crimson eyeliner – structured yet a little bit disheveled under the eye, with lip colours that range from pale nude to a subtle blood tint is the look du jour. Tim Burton would've been so proud!

Makeup tip: The focus is in the eyes, so get those eyes looking intense and gorgeous with 1 • DAY ACUVUE® DEFINE™ & 1 • DAY ACUVUE® MOIST®. If using eye shadow, keep it light and smudgy. If using eyeliner, draw a thin, very dark line just on the edge of the eyes and smudge a touch of red eye shadow over the line.

Warholian pop art   Warholian pop art

An unexpected inspiration for a strong autumn trend is pop art icon Andy Warhol. While designers like Jonathan Saunders sent his models gliding down the runway with green or hot pink eye brows, the look translated for the street is one with thick, strong, dark eyebrows, a super–clean face and a bright red lip. The entire effect is one of contrasts – almost cartoonish and pop–arty. It is about strong, defined lines and colours.

Makeup tip: 1 • DAY ACUVUE® DEFINE™ & 1 • DAY ACUVUE® MOIST® are perfect for taking the defined look a step further. Keep your hair well–combed and slick with a shine–giving hair serum.

Graphic    Graphic

Graphic shapes have jumped from clothes to the face. At Versace, the eyes were given a stark, solid wing shape for dramatic effect. Black graphite shadow is used on the top of the eyelids, with white eyeliner in the inner rim of the eyes, accompanied by pale, pale lips. At the Paul Smith Women show, the graphic theme was translated into neon colours on the eyes – for example, a fuchsia line on the top of the lid accompanied by a jet–black line closer to the lashes and loads of mascara.

Makeup tip: The trick is subtlety. Forget thick blocks of neon colours on your eyes. Keep the graphic lines thin, but the colours intense. Draw a thin line close to the top lashes and wing them outwards, using an unexpected colour like purple.
